Matthias Weckman – 350th Anniversary, and the North German Organ School

In 2000, the North German Baroque organ in Örgryte New Church, constructed in the style of Arp Schnitger (1648–1719), one of the most significant organ builders in history, was inaugurated. Arp Schnitger, active in North Germany, constructed over 150 organs. He was the first truly international organ builder, melding top-tier craftsmanship and sound quality with a larger production of instruments than any preceding organ builder. The distinctive Baroque organ in Örgryte New Church was constructed as a research project by organ builders from twelve countries in collaboration between the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. It was designed in Schnitger’s style and serves as the focal point of the annual Arp Schnitger Academy (ASA), scheduled for August 4-9, 2024. This international academy hosts a limited number of participants who will study organ playing on the Baroque organ in Örgryte New Church under the guidance of Hans Davidsson. The focus in 2024 will be on the organ works of Matthias Weckman (c. 1616–1674) and repertoire from the North German organ school of the 17th century, selected by the participants.
